Roy Williams Prioritizing Rabb

Roy Williams Prioritizing Rabb

LAS VEGAS --- Ivan Rabb is one of North Carolina’s top recruiting priorities, as evidenced by Roy Williams’s first stop during July Evaluation Period No. 1.

UNC’s head coach was in Las Vegas for the 6-10, 209-pound prospect’s opening game at the LeBron James Skills Academy on Wednesday evening.

The Tar Heels have already hosted him for an unofficial visit. Rabb made it clear at the LeBron James Skills Academy that the heavy interest is mutual.

“I like their whole coaching staff,” Rabb said. “When I went down there on the unofficial they made me feel like I was family already.”

“I met all the guys and pretty much everyone that was there,” he said about his visit. “I liked the campus and I liked everything about the school. I think they are going to be one of the biggest schools on my list.”

While Roy Williams wasn’t in town when Rabb took his unofficial, the two have been communicating often and their relationship is getting stronger.

“I like him a lot,” Rabb said of Williams. “Every time we talk he makes me laugh. He’s not all about basketball. He cares about what I’m doing off the court and how I’m doing in the classroom. That’s really important to me.”

What is the biggest draw to North Carolina for Rabb?

“I just like what they do with their big men,” he said. “I like their fan base. They have a real good fan base. I went up there and they had a good business school. That’s what I want to do if basketball doesn’t work out or even after basketball.”

Rabb currently has a long list of schools that includes the Tar Heels, Georgetown, California, Arizona, UCLA, USC, Duke and a host of others. He said the next step in his process is to cut his list and then set up five official visits.

“I’m still trying to figure out the five that I want to do,” Rabb said. “I still have to cut my list to five. I’m not even there yet. The visits I am thinking about are not even close yet.”

Although North Carolina has had Rabb on campus recently, the staff didn’t waste any time attempting to get him back to Chapel Hill.

“As soon as I left they told me they want to get me back out there,” he said.

In an interview a couple months ago, Rabb said UNC mentioned its “Late Night with Roy” event on Oct. 3 as a potential official visit weekend. This week he indicated no progress had been made on scheduling that or any other official visit.

Rabb said he is contemplating an unofficial visit to Arizona in the fall.

“I’m thinking about doing an unofficial to the Red/Blue game,” he said. “I was scheduled to go on an unofficial to USC, UCLA and Arizona but the plans fell through. We had a family emergency, but we couldn’t do it.”

Rabb, who is ranked as Scout.com’s No. 3 overall prospect in the 2015 class, is currently planning on deciding in the spring, but he did say that could change.

“I’ll end up waiting, but you never know I might know where I want to go before and I might just get it over with then,” he said. “Right now I don’t know where I want to go.”
