Aaron Holiday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Aaron Holiday is an exception to the rule when it comes to prospects requesting to be listed at a specific position, while Brandon Sampson has a couple schools he knows he'll take official visits to.

Holiday doesn't require a label

There may not be a subject that prospects, AAU and high school coaches and parents disagree with scouts more on than when it comes to what position a player projects to be at the next level.

A good percent of shooting guards think they're point guards, while power forwards and centers often think they're small forwards.

The rule of thumb seems to be just about every player 6-foot-2 or smaller – and some much taller – claim to be a point guard.

Which makes 2015 UCLA commit Aaron Holiday a breath of fresh air.

The 6-foot, 175-pound North Hollywood (Calif.) Campbell Hall combo guard doesn't care what position you list him at; there's something he's much more concerned with than that.

"I'll play wherever the coaches want me to," Holiday said. "All I care about is winning."

While Holiday's answer should be standard, it's far from it. And when pressed on the question, he still doesn't budge when it comes to what position he wants to play at the next level.

"To be honest, it doesn't matter," he said. "I could be a scorer or get my teammates involved. Whatever the coaches need, I'm going to do it."

Scout.com lists Holiday as a point guard due to the strides he's made in his passing, shot selection and ability to run a team over the last few years.

While scoring is his specialty and usually his focus, he's made enough progress running the point that it's a position he could ultimately be successful at.

"I feel like I'm getting my teammates involved a lot more than I used to back in the day," Holiday said.

Whether he plays on or off the ball at the next level, Holiday is going to UCLA with high expectations.

"Hopefully we're going to win Pac-12 and national championships," Holiday said.

Sampson eyeing official visits

There's still a long way to go in Brandon Sampson's recruitment, considering the 6-foot-4, 170-pound Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep shooting guard says he won't be making a decision until the spring.

However, Sampson's recruitment is very much active, as he's promised two schools official visits.

"I'm going to take official visits to California and Saint John's," Sampson said.

Sampson has a long list of suitors so he's still trying to figure out what other schools will receive officials – of which he hopes to take all five – but if he had to choose today, he could pick three others.

"Oklahoma State, LSU and Texas A&M," Sampson listed.

With a spring decision in mind, Sampson has time before he decides for sure.

"I'm just trying to get better and pick up more offers," he said. "I'm trying to get my name out there and move up the Top 100."
