CHAMPAIGN, Ill.- Illinois freshman forward Richard Semrau (Grafton, Ohio/Lutheran West HS) had surgery today at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill., to remove an internal infection that had formed following a serious contusion to the lining of his chest wall nearly two weeks ago.

"Rich was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning and upon evaluation, doctors found an infection had settled in and decided that surgery was the proper way to remove it," Head Coach Bruce Weber said. "He'll spend the next few days in the hospital and will be out of action indefinitely. We certainly are very concerned about Rich's health and look forward to having him back with the team once he is fully recovered."

Semrau is averaging 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in five games so far this season.

Weber said Semrau will seek a medical redshirt.
