B.J. Young Ends Recruitment

John Pelphrey locked in on B.J. Young last July. The coach was front and center for his last game of the summer and Young made the Razorbacks his first visit. He won't need a second.

On the final day of the July evaluation period, Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey stood on the baseline of the main court at the AAU Nationals. The Razorbacks coach had one player in mind: B.J. Young.

The 6-foot-2 point guard out of Florissant (Mo.) McCluer North, rated No. 17 in the senior class and the No. 3 overall point guard, committed to the Razorbacks during his weekend official visit. Illinois State, Baylor, Marquette, Indiana and North Carolina State made pitches to him. Pelphrey was the lone head coach evaluating him on that final day in July.

Pelphrey's commitment to Young was reciprocated. "He showed me a lot," Young said. "I was ready to show the same commitment."

Young hasn't played much high school basketball. Because of transfers and academics, he's missed a good portion of his high school career. However, this spring his star took off rising and Young has seemingly grasped the significance of the moment. He went from being a local name to a national priority.

Making the early commitment will allow him to focus on the books. "I'm ready to focus on school and taking more visits would have hurt (my academics)."

Young is fired up about the Hogs. "I think we can win in the SEC. I think I fight in well and we can get it done."

Young was the No. 2 point guard at the 2010 NBA Top 100 Camp.
