There are two variables that mean a great deal in recruiting: location and relationships. Jahii Carson resides 10 minutes from Tempe and he's got a strong relationship with ASU's staff. On Saturday, Jahii Carson changed his status from "single" to "in a relationship" as Arizona State locked him up.

At N.C. State, Herb Sendek recruited a charismatic wing named Julius Hodge. Now, Sendek has another player with a similar approach and personality. On Saturday, Mesa (Ariz.) High point guard Jahii Carson committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils

“It’s a big one for Coach Sendek in the state,” Mesa coach Shane Burcar told “The coaching staff more than anything was the key and the location.”

Carson is known for a few things: his personality and his scoring prowess. At NBA Camp in June, Carson was a leader and entertainer wrapped into one quickster. Ranked No. 69 in his class and No. 12 at the point (and rising), he put in 23 points a game as a junior.

“He’s been here for a year and we were No. 1 most of the year last year,” Burcar said. “He broke our single season scoring and assist record; we’ve been playing since 1912. What he brought to us, more than anything, is leadership. That’s the type of kid he is.”

UCLA, Arizona and Washington were the finalists for Carson. “I don’t think Jahii knew where he wanted to go but today he went over there on an unofficial. Coach Sendek and his staff did such a good job with him and that’s where he wanted to go.”

Carson lives 10 minutes from ASU’s campus. His family will see every home game and they won’t be afraid to mount up and make the ride to Los Angeles either so his support system is strong, especially with this selection of the Sun Devils.

Carson’s addition, given the state of what’s available nationally and on the west coast point guard-wise, is of major significance for Sendek’s crew. It’s a big day in Tempe. He’s 10 minutes from ASU. He’s got a great support group with his family and they can see every game.
