James McAdoo is one busy guy. With USA Basketball and his traveling team, the summer was going to be taxing. Now, a new option has been floated his way and it could change the landscape of his summer schedule.

James McAdoo was destined to have a busy summer. McAdoo, Scout.com’s No. 5 prospect in the Class of 2011, is a main cog in USA Basketball’s U17 potential world championship team.

However, before he leaves for international competition there’s another variable to consider in his long-term equation: enrolling at North Carolina this fall and starting his college career a year early.

McAdoo, when reached on Tuesday, admitted that he’s mulled over the option of graduating from Norfolk Christian and joining the Tar Heels next season.

“It’s definitely something that’s been known for a while,” McAdoo said. “With the Wear Twins just now leaving people are starting to talk about it. Me and my family have sat down and talked about it and it’s a high possibility. I’m considering it but its nothing set in stone yet.”

Graduating from college and enrolling a year ahead of schedule at UNC is a complicated endeavor. Last summer, Andre Dawkins made the transition from Boo Williams to Duke a year early, but he had one more year of high school under his belt. McAdoo would essentially have to tweak his AAU schedule, bypass all the trimmings that come with being a high school all-american – which he’s prepared to do – and focus a good portion of his final summer on achieving the courses required to graduate and move on a year early.

McAdoo wants to make the best decision possible for his long-term future. He’s got his sights set on playing professional basketball one day and this option may help him improve as a player.

“It’s way better than playing against high school competition. Even if I did go I could red shirt, maybe put on some pounds and develop my game. But, there are so many things that could change. If I stay at Norfolk Christian we’d have a tough schedule but I don’t know if that would be the best for helping me get to my end goal.”

While UNC is aware of the possibility, McAdoo, at this point, hasn’t made up his mind and if he does elect to give early entry a run, he’d have to receive the OK from his high school coach who expects to have him next season.

“I haven’t talked to (UNC) much about it. I’m sure they’ll be open to it. I talked to coach about it a long time ago before I decided to come back to Norfolk Christian. I definitely gave my high school coach my word that I’m coming back. He may let me out of my word. As of right now I’m going back to Norfolk Christian.”

With McAdoo’s summer schedule, squeezing in three classes would admittedly be tough and that’s a factor in the decision. He’s under no immediate timetable to reach this decision. His USA Basketball commitment begins in a few weeks and he’s expected to make the team and travel to Germany for the world championships the first 10 days of July. What the future holds for him following the event, who knows?

“I’m going to make the right decision for me in the long run.”

With the addition of Justin Knox, North Carolina has 11 players on scholarship for the 2010-11 season. The NCAA limit is 13.

The 6-9, 215-pound forward committed to UNC on Sept. 6, 2009, after attending the Tar Heels' Alumni Game weekend.

McAdoo led Norfolk Christian to the Virginia Independent Schools Division II State Championship as a junior. He averaged 22.5 points and 9.9 rebounds, shooting 57 percent from the field and 44 percent from the three-point line.
