ACC Calls Irving
No. 5 Kyrie Irving
No. 5 Kyrie Irving
National Recruiting Director
Posted Oct 22, 2009

The saga is over. From U-Streams to Twitter, Kyrie Irving used all forms of media to keep everyone updated on his recruitment. However, on Thursday it was the mainstream media by which he broadcast his selection.

Jason Williams was the No. 1 point guard in 1999. A year later, Chris Duhon occupied the same position. Both picked Duke; each was part of a national title team.

In 2004, Duke signed Shaun Livingston and then Greg Paulus a year later, each regarded as the premier floor general in their respective class.

Think Mike Krzyzewski doesn’t value good point guard play?

This time around, Kyrie Irving checks in at the No. 5 overall prospect and No. 2 point guard. Next fall his legacy will begin in Durham.

In front of a television audience, Irving selected the Blue Devils after considering Kentucky and Texas A&M. Ironically, it was UK that Duke bested for the last time it recruited a national title winning point guard (see Chris Duhon).

"I'm pleased to announce that I will be committing to Duke University," Irving said. "I'll be a Blue Devil next year."

The Blue Devils add to their recruiting haul with Irving who immediately becomes the top recruit in their 2010 class. He joins point guard Tyler Thornton and power forward Josh Hairston.
