2012's Davis Stays In-State
Mom went to Purdue and now her son will follow in her footsteps. Raphael Davis, a freshman wing out of Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Southside, committed to Purdue after making a recent unofficial visit. "His personality, he's a real soft-spoken kid," Jared Quarles, Davis' traveling team coach told Scout.com. "First he wanted to be really close to home and they didn't want him to leave out of state. He's the type of kid that wants to get somewhere and get to know the coach. His family is so tight-knit they wanted to get to know the program and feel a part of the program." Davis averaged 17 points a game as a freshman and was a first-team all-conference player. Quarles said Davis targeted Purdue a long time ago. "In the eighth grade he told me he wanted to go there. It wasn't like a dream come true but he wanted to go there." Just a freshman, Davis has room to improve as everyone continues to learn about his game. "His strength is that he's so versatile," Quarles said. "He's 6-5 and he hasn't matured body-wise. He's patient with his game. He played the post in middle school and now he's more of a guard but can still do those things. He's strong and he's a mismatch. He definitely has to work on being consistent from 3-range with his jump shot."
