Slam Spotlight: Courtney Nelson

Posted Dec 28, 2002

LEWES, Del. – Courtney Nelson probably would have liked a do-over against Amityville. His team didn’t play well and they dropped their first game of the year. On Friday, Nelson and Bloomfield got the ship sailing in the right direction again.

Nelson Scores 21 In Win

The loss to Amityville in the opening round of the Slam Dunk to the Beach was a painful one for Courtney Nelson and Bloomfield Tech. “We were focused, but we got off to a slow start,” Nelson said. “I think that loss helped us today.”

Bloomfield took down Friends Central and Nelson was a guiding light in the win. He exhibited more leadership than he had the day before and really used his own offensive fortunes to fuel his teammates. Da’Shawn Wright stroked open jumpers because Nelson was able to attack the basket.

On Friday, Nelson was the dictator of the pace of the game and that’s how he envisions it all the time. “I felt we let Amityville control the tempo too much. Today, we did a great job on [Mustafa] Shakur. He’ll get his 25-30 but you have to hold everyone else down.”

Assistants from UMass and Villanova were in the stands watching. Those two schools, along with Connecticut, Seton Hall, Ohio State, Cincinnati and St. Joe’s comprise his early list.

Villanova and Seton Hall, according to Nelson, have offered. But Nelson indicated that he in no way felt pressured to reach a decision too soon.
