Wootten Invitational Dec. 7

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – DeMatha Catholic High School will once again highlight the seventh annual Morgan Wootten Invitational on Saturday, December 7, 2002, at the University of Maryland's brand new Comcast Center.

Games Are On Dec. 7

Press Release

The first game will feature Thomas Johnson High School (Frederick, Md.) against Annapolis High School (Annapolis, Md.) in a cross-state showdown. Thomas Johnson has reached the state championship game the past two years and begins its 2002-03 campaign against the defending Anne Arundel County champion, Annapolis, which finished 25-1 last year behind sharp-shooting guard Laronja Owens.

The second game features the University of Maryland's 7'0 recruit Will Bowers from Archbishop Spalding High School (Severn, Md.), against New York's legendary Archbishop Molloy High School (Briarwood, N.Y.). Molloy, ranked in the preseason national top 20 poll by USA Today, features lightning quick point guard Marlon Smith and legendary head coach Jack Curran.

The third game has two of the region's powerhouses facing off, as Bishop O'Connell High School (Arlington, Va.) meets Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, Md.). Roosevelt, coming off its Maryland state title, hopes to continue its success. O'Connell is highlighted by 6'10 junior power forward Brian Johnson, the youngest player to ever play on a U.S. national team.

The final game of the evening features two of the region's most powerful programs over the past few years in DeMatha and Col. Zadok Magruder High School (Rockville, Md.). DeMatha won its eight WCAC championship since 1990 and second straight DC City Title Game last year, while Magruder is coming off its second straight appearance in the Maryland state semifinal.
