Ray McCallum’s first commitment from the Class of 2009 is a big one. John Hoskins, a 6-foot-9 center out of Roseville (Mich.) Conner Creek Academy, picked Detroit Mercy over offers from Duquesne, Central Michigan, Bowling Green and Cleveland State.
During his junior season, Hoskins (the nephew of K-State wing David Hoskins) averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds. He’ll play his college basketball right in his own backyard miles from his home.
“I think it was more that he liked the coaches and felt comfortable with them,” John Hoskins, Sr., told Scout.com. “He wanted to be close to home. He’ll be 15-20 minutes from campus. I think he wanted to be a part of the changes that they’re trying to make at U of D.”
The commitment is a big one for McCallum. It’s an in-state player with city ties. McCallum’s tasked with resurrecting a once-proud program.
“Everybody’s liking what he’s trying to do with the changes that he’s going to make.”
