McDonald's AA: Monday Practice Report
Jrue Holiday, SG/PG, West – Holiday got in late Monday evening, but the tardy arrival certainly didn't have any affect on his play. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard threw pinpoint passes, scored when he needed to and played terrific defense throughout the practice session. His overall feel for the game and basketball IQ is extremely high, and he has the ability to play a trio of positions at the college level. Brandon Jennings, PG, West – Alongside Holiday in the West backcourt is Jennings, and the two are quite the tandem. While Holiday just gets it done, Jennings, who was sporting a flat top haircut, goes for a little more flash. The 6-foot-1 lead-man was looking for open teammates and made a number of sweet passes in transition. Look for Jennings to push the break every chance he gets during the game on Wednesday. Greg Monroe, PF, West –The 6-foot-10, 235-pounder had a pretty good practice. He showed great body control on spins in the paint and he managed to finish a bunch of shots around the bucket. One of his best moves was a floater over Mullens on a fast break. B.J. Mullens, C, West – The future Buckeye impressed us today with his play around the rim. He's strong, likes to dunk everything and is quite an athlete for a guy standing 7-feet tall. He's going to make an impact on the Ohio State program right away, as he can dominate the post when motivated. Davis Has Big Day Ed Davis, PF, East – The East team had an intrasquad scrimmage for the last 30 minutes of their practice session and Davis had the best performance. He used a handful of post moves to score inside, including his go-to move – a jump hook over his left shoulder. He maneuvers well in the paint, runs the floor well and is active on the glass. Davis finished with 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting during the scrimmage. Samardo Samuels, C/PF, East – The big man headed to Louisville next year was hanging all over the rim on Wednesday. Samuels threw down dunk after dunk during the East's scrimmage, as his power and strength was too much for the other post prospects on the East squad. One match up that intrigues us is Samuels against B.J. Mullens. They'll likely match up in the game and it should be fun to see them go head-to-head. Kemba Walker, PG, East – It looks like Walker will be the starting point guard for the East team. He ran with the first group today and he looked great doing so, especially in transition. He has plenty of weapons around him and throughout practice he was looking to get his teammates involved. His handle is crisp and he's extremely quick. The East squad had an easy practice. They split up the wings and bigs for part of the time and worked on some skill development. They also spent a lot of time doing 4-on-4 and 5-on-5 full court drills. For their final 30 minutes they had an intrasquad scrimmage. The West squad spent a lot of time today working on fast breaks. To go with their transition work the West coaches went over their offense and did some 5-on-5 full court drills. One thing we noticed today during practice was how quickly the West team pushed the ball. They also played with a lot of flash, as they threw a number of alley-oops and were looking to dunk at every opportunity. With the top prospects in the 2008 class in attendance there are a bunch of match ups that should be interesting. Jennings versus Walker is a key one, as they are both super quick and look to push the tempo. The big man match ups are always interesting as well. North Carolina signee Tyler Zeller won the EA Sports video game Sunday night. A few of his peers mentioned that he never takes bad shots in real life or in video games. The Powerade Jam Fest will be taped Monday evening. There will be another practice Tuesday morning, then the game will be Wednesday night at 9:30 EST. It will be televised on ESPN. Tyreke Evans named of a top four of Memphis, Texas, Villanova and Connecticut. He's planning to announce on his college decision during a televised press conference on April 16th.
