Coaches Check Out Emerging Big Man
In recent weeks coaches have flocked to La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere to check out Serbian native Luka Mirkovic. The 6-foot-11, 220-pound senior big man arrived in the United States just before the season and is making a big impact on his high school program, as he's averaging 25 points and 13 rebounds per game. "He's been good, especially as of late," La Lumiere coach Delray Brooks said. "He's been very good. He came here and just got in the country in August and it was a little bit of an adjustment for him, but he's been playing really, really well lately." "He can really, really shoot the ball," he continued. "He's going to be able to bring big kids out away from the basket and he's also pretty good in the post, although that's not his strongest suit right now. He's got great hands and a great feel for the game." With majority of the top post prospects already signed or committed, La Lumiere has been a popular stop for college coaches. Rick Pitino, Tom Crean, Bill Carmody, Matt Painter and Jerry Wainwright make up the list of head coaches that have visited. Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Ball State, Providence and Valparaiso have sent assistants. While Kentucky, Marquette Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M have all made contact with Mirkovic and his coaching staff. "He's just wide open right now," Brooks said. "We are going to sit down after the season is over and figure what he likes and what he doesn't like and try and figure out the pros and cons of each situation and hopefully make a decision from there." Mirkovic has already taken visits to Northwestern and DePaul. Next up is likely a trip to Louisville, but Brooks said a date has not been set. "They are trying to figure that out right now," Brooks said of his next visit. "We are trying to figure that out right now. It'll be sometime after our season is over." Mirkovic and La Lumiere have a handful of regular season games left and will close out the season with the Christian Schools TRN at Covenant Christian in Indianapolis (Ind.).
