Interest Picks Up For Ward
Romero Osby and Courtney Fortson got majority of the attention for Southeast Elite, but Varez Ward certainly earned his fair share in July. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard was especially impressive in Las Vegas. "I felt like I did pretty good out there," Ward said. "I'd probably give myself a B minus." Although he didn't grade out as well as he would have liked, Varez certainly proved to college coaches that he's capable of playing on and off the ball at the next level. He's quick, athletic and capable of getting to the basket. Following July, Varez said he saw a "big difference" in his recruitment. He's received the most interest from Mississippi State, Mississippi, Kentucky, Missouri, UAB, Arkansas and South Carolina. Thus far he has scholarship offers from UAB, Mississippi State, Mississippi, Missouri and South Carolina. With offers in hand, Ward wants to take a few visits, but he's putting that on hold until he gets to Patterson (N.C.) Patterson School. "Not as of right now," he said, when asked if he had set up any visits. "My coach wants me to get situated with prep school first. He wants me to get in there and then we are supposed to take some." The class of 2008 product did indicate that he would like to take trips to South Carolina and Missouri. He feels comfortable with the Gamecocks and Tigers, and said they've been showing the most interest. "With Missouri, I like the way they press and play an up tempo style," Ward said, "I just like [South Carolina's] style of play and I think if I go there I'll have a good chance of playing my freshman year." Ward, who is rated as a three-star prospect by Scout.com, doesn't have a time frame on when he will make his college decision.
