Some organizations will have you believe that July trips to Las Vegas for AAU teams are a bad idea. Try telling Adrian Schaffer of Rochester Hills (MI) Adams that.
“I’m kind of happy for the Big Time because I got my chance to shine,” Schaffer said. “That was a good thing.” It sure was. His week landed him fourth on the scoring list at the tournament and his 40 point effort was one of the top scoring games of the tournament.
Prior to the Big Time, Schaffer didn’t have a Division I scholarship offer. Enter Wisconsin-Green Bay and first-year head coach Tod Kowalczyk. “He was one of the reasons [I committed]. Once the tournament was over, I got a message from coach. When I got home, I listened to the message and it said he wanted to offer me a scholarship. When I talked to him for the first time I knew I liked him.”
Schaffer took an unofficial visit to the school last weekend. Central Michigan, Detroit and Central Florida showed solid interest in him, but none had offered a scholarship. Kowalczyk beat them to the punch.
Last year, Schaffer averaged 17 points a game. Regardless, he didn’t draw much attention. “I played against everyone in Oakland County and surprised everyone. But, it was just the local people. When I played against the people that were ranked, I guess there wasn’t anybody with any authority in the gym.
