Jake Kelly is going to play his basketball in the Big Ten. The 6-foot-5 Carmel High product didn’t need to sleep on his decision too long after he made an official visit.

During the first week of April, guard Jake Kelly was good. Good enough that he went from mid-major priority recruit to garnering the interest of numerous high-major programs. In fact, he had a good enough week at the adidas Superstar Camp that he made the all-star game. However, Kelly never got to play in the contest.

Kelly overslept and missed the game completely. Disappointed and crushed might not be strong enough adjectives to describe how he felt. “I worked so hard to get in the all-star game and then I slept through it,” Kelly chuckled.

Proving the value of the early July camps, Kelly quickly ascended up the wish lists of schools and on Tuesday committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes over Pepperdine and Penn State. He visited Iowa last weekend.

“I really got along with the team,” Kelly said. “As soon as I got there I just knew it was where I best fit in.

“I have to come in and fill the role with 2 seniors leaving. Hopefully I’ll get a lot of playing time. They want me to play the 2 guard but I can play all three guard positions if I need to.”

So there you have it. Steve Alford and company followed him, evaluated him and eventually offered. Kelly made his visit, saw what he liked and committed. He didn’t even have to sleep on it.

Not this time. It really came down to Pepperdine, Penn State and Iowa.
