On July 17, Robbie Hummel became the third Top 100 recruit to commit to Matt Painter’s Purdue program this year. Hummel, ranked No. 60 by Scout.com, selected the Purdue Boilermakers over the Indiana Hoosiers.
In picking to play his college basketball in West Lafayette, Hummel joined a pair of Top 100 players in E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson. Moore, one of the fastest rising players in the country, picked Painter’s Purdue program while playing at the Peach Jam.
“I think it was the coaches,” Hummel said of the reason he picked Purdue. “I really feel comfortable with Coach Painter and his staff and I really just like the place. I think it’s the best fit for me.”
The Boilermakers are sitting on an outstanding recruiting class, sure to be one of the elite in the Big Ten and a strong class nationally. With these commitments, the Boilermakers extensive work last season has paid off. Now, the foundation for the program going forward has been laid.
“I think it’s awesome. It’s great to be a part of a program that’s always good. But I think it’s going to be a challenge to try and re-invent the program. It’s a great opportunity and hopefully we can put our mark on Purdue basketball.”
Hummel’s summer has been tremendous so far. He was one of the best performers at the Nike All-American Camp and then helped the SYF Players to a Final Four finish at Peach Jam.
“My high school season didn’t go as well I would have liked. I had mono and we lost in the regional final and it wasn’t what we wanted. This summer has been a lot better. I feel like I have my jumping ability back and everything’s been going really well.”
