Jonnie West, a senior shooting guard of Memphis Lausanne High committed to West Virginia this weekend, according to the Commercial Appeal.
West told the paper of his return to Beckley, W.V., for a tournament earlier this month and how he was excited by the reception he received.
“It was louder than anything I’ve received at Lausanne. It was a good feeling,” the guard told the newspaper.
“But West Virginia has been my No. 1 choice for a long time. I’ve always liked the school and when they started recruiting me I just fell in love with the school and the coaching staff.”
West’s father is the president of basketball operations for the Memphis Grizzlies, one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players and a former all-american at West Virginia.
Jonnie West is a cerebral guard with a fine stroke. Given West Virginia’s style of play and his ability to assimilate into a structured system, the fit was natural. West attended the Nike All-American Camp last summer.
The newspaper indicated that Penn, Dartmouth, Eastern Kentucky and Gonzaga had shown interest but not offered West.
