Thanksgiving weekend marks the unofficial beginning of the high school basketball season. Scout.com catches you up on what happened Tuesday night around the nation.

SOUTH

Monta Ellis, Scout.com’s No. 2 prospect in America, had it working against Meridian and Arkansas recruit Cyrus McGowan (Top 100). The 6-foot-3 Ellis pumped in a season-high 51 points for Lanier which won the game 70-69. McGowan was limited to just 9 points.

Ellis is gearing up for his annual trip to the Marshall County Hoopfest where last year he hit up Oak Hill for a big number and drew national recognition for taking the Warriors to the limit.

Tasmin Mitchell (No. 17) and Tyler Hansbrough (No. 7) will meet Thanksgiving night in what should be a classic. However, on Tuesday evening Denham Springs warmed up with Dutchtown and defeated them 70-33. The 6-foot-7 Mitchell scored a team-high 18 points.

The best sophomore in Raleigh is Broughton guard Brock Young. The 5-foot-10 Young led his squad past Athens Drive, 62-45 Tuesday evening. Young scored a game-high 18 points. Broughton has been home to some elite level players in the past including Pistol Pete Maravich and Shavlik Randolph.

Junior Stanley Robinson put together a nice outing Tuesday evening. Huffman defeated Woodlawn 59-47 behind 18 points and 17 rebounds from the Class of 2006 power forward. During a decisive third quarter run, Robinson pumped in 13 points.

High scoring senior Tyler Smith of Giles County scored 20 points Tuesday evening. The 6-foot-6 Smith, ranked No. 45 in the country by Scout.com, helped lead his team to a 69-47 win over Lawrence County.

Junior power forward Matt Gwynne had a big night for Raleigh (N.C.) Ravenscroft. In a one-point loss to Wake Christian Academy, the 6-foot-8 Gwynne scored 29 points. Ravenscroft lost the game 75-74.

MIDWEST

Julian Wright’s team is now 2-0. Homewood-Flossmoor knocked off Kennedy 87-32 in action Tuesday night. Wright, Scout.com’s No. 5 player in the country, scored 8 points in the win.

DeAndre Thomas led a spirited Westinghouse bunch past Chicago Crane 83-45 Tuesday night. Thomas, an unsigned senior power forward, went off for 22 points and 15 rebounds in the win.

Brandon Ewing helped Julian secure a rather easy victory of Farragut. Ewing scored 18 points as Julian rolled 78-55.
