Last year Matt Smith didn’t exactly get a bevy of shots playing alongside current Colorado freshman Richard Roby and future Arizona State forward Sylvester Seay at Lawrence Academy.
This year will be different for Smith. In fact, it already has as the 6-5, 190-pound wing, who didn’t field a single D-1 offer last season at Lawrence, has committed to Northeastern before playing a single game at Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.).
``He plays hard, has a good basketball IQ and can really shoot the three,” NMH associate head coach John Carroll said. “He just has a knack for getting good, open looks.”
Smith is a big-time shooter who will need to improve his ballhandling and quickness, but he’s a nice get for Huskies coach Ron Everhart.
``When I went on my visit, I felt real comfortable with the staff,” Smith said. “All the players were good guys and they are moving up to the Colonial Conference my freshman year, which is definitely a plus. Hopefully, I’ll have a chance to start my freshman year.”
Smith, who played with the Middlesex Magic, is from Littleton, Mass., and also pointed to the fact that he can play in front of his friends and family as a major factor why he chose Northeastern.
``They really wined and dined me on my visit and made me feel wanted,” Smith said.
