Virginia Commonwealth and head coach Jeff Capel landed one of its most important recruiting targets of the year on Wednesday night. Eric Maynor, a 6-foot-2, 165 pound prospect out of Fayetteville (N.C.) Westover, picked the Rams after considering Tulane, East Tennessee State, Appalachian State and Winthrop.

Maynor, a point guard, played at Hoke County last season before transferring for his senior year to Westover.

The talented mid-major point man said that he knew the time was right to commit to VCU. "I had to get that off my chest," Maynor said. "There was a lot of schools involved but I wanted to play my senior season not worrying about where I was going to school."

Maynor was particularly impressed that Capel, the head coach, was put in charge of his recruitment. "He's the head coach of his program and he was calling me every week. Sometimes, it was just the assistants from other schools but I know he was really interested in me."

VCU is about 3 and ½ hours from Maynor's home and his family will be able to see him play college basketball in the CAA.

"I went up there on an unofficial to visit the campus and I liked it a lot. I know some of the players on the team and I think I can go in there right away and have a chance to play."

VCU certainly thinks he can.
