Western Illinois coach Derek Thomas never let David Jackson out of his site. The first-year coach of the Leathernecks followed him across the country, watching, recruiting and hoping to get a shot at him in the end.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks received a significant commitment this week. David Jackson, a 6-4 scoring guard out of Memphis Westside, pledge his allegiance to the program.

“I think I can have a pretty good impact if I go up there and keep my head right” Jackson said. “God will help me do some things. I think we can win the conference and maybe go to the NCAA a couple of times.

“They’re recruiting me as a shooting guard and I like to shoot. I can put some serious points up.”

Western Illinois battled the likes of Colorado, Arkansas State, South Alabama, Murray State and Wichita State to nab Jackson. He visited the Leathernecks and Colorado.

“The coaches at Western Illinois, they showed more interest in me. They wanted me on the team a lot more.”

“Coach Thomas, he’s a pretty nice guy. He’s on his team a lot. I like a coach who is going to be on players. It shows how much he wants to win. Coach James, the assistant coach recruited me, he saw me a long time ago and told me that I would be on his team one day.”

And Coach James was telling the truth. Western Illinois landed their top perimeter target of the year this week. Jackson was a valuable player on the Memphis YOMCA team that captured the AAU national title.
