Ben Brown, a 6-10, 185 pound power forward from Richmond (VA) Steward School, committed to the College of Charleston Cougars over the weekend. Brown averaged 14 points and a dozen rebounds as a junior.
The Cougars, along with Morgan State, have been on him the longest and hardest. “It’s just the fact that they were really interested in me not just for basketball but for the other things that I contributed to the school,” Brown said.
Apparently, Charleston is ready to move him around and have him play a number of positions. “That’s the thing. They don’t know quite yet [what position I am]. Right now they’re thinking the three or four. But, at the same time, they’re going to work with me and get me a whole lot bigger. We’ll have to see from there.”
The match with Charleston works on a number of fronts. For starters, his family was looking to move to South Carolina and now they have another reason. “Towards the middle of the school year, my mom told me that if I didn’t go back to the Steward School, we’d move back [to South Carolina] this summer. Since I was accepted, she said that we’ll be here for another year. Then, the College of Charleston came; it was a perfect fit for academics and athletics.”
Brown played AAU ball sparingly with the Richmond Squires.
