Memphis adds another Lawson

Dedric Lawson, a top 10 recruit in the 2016 class, is headed to Memphis to be coached by his father and to play with his older brother.

It’s a family affair at Memphis.

In early October, 2015 recruit K.J. Lawson, Scout.com’s No. 37 ranked prospect, committed to Josh Pastner and Memphis. Earlier this week, Lawson’s father, Keelon, was hired as an assistant at Memphis.

On Sunday, Dedric Lawson joined the party. Lawson told Scout.com following his Peach Jam semi-finals game that he plans to play his college basketball with his family.

“It’s a definite,” Lawson said about joining the Tigers.

“It really pushed the issue with my dad getting the coaching job,” Lawson said. “With him being on staff there’s no other college I’d rather go to.”

The 6-foot-8, 200-pound power forward has played with his brother his whole life and he’s excited to continue that in college.

“It’s going to be a blessing to do it on a high collegiate level,” he said. “We’ve been doing it our whole lives. It’s nothing new. It’s the same thing, but it’s a blessing for us to be able to do it.”

“The best thing about Memphis is it’s a great environment,” Lawson added. “Coach Pastner is a great guy. It’s a great feel playing in front of your home crowd. It’s just nothing but love in Memphis.”

Lawson is currently ranked No. 2 at the power forward position and No. 9 overall in Scout.com’s 2016 rankings.
