Stone discusses the latest
One of the biggest storylines of the 2015 recruiting class is the possible Diamond Stone/Malik Newman package deal. On separate occasions this spring, Stone and Newman have told Scout.com that they plan to go to school together. While Stone reiterated their intentions at the Reebok Breakout Classic, he also said he wouldn’t eliminate schools that were recruiting him individually. “We are just best friends that are trying to play with each other,” Stone explained. “Who wouldn’t want to play with their best friend?” “I don’t want to cancel anybody out,” Stone added. “We are just weighing our options. He likes certain schools and I like certain schools. We are just trying to see how that goes.” Which colleges are recruiting them as a package deal? “Connecticut, Kentucky is recruiting us both, Kansas is recruiting us both,” Stone said. “Pretty much everybody is recruiting us both.” Of those schools, Connecticut is the only one Stone has visited. He stopped by their campus in mid-June for an unofficial visit. “It was great,” he said of the trip. “[Kevin] Ollie is a great coach. Their style is great. Everyone is great and the academic advisors. They are all great and on the same page.” “I like Ollie because he’s not worried about the basketball part,” he added. “He said the basketball part is going to handle itself. He’s about making me a better man, a better person and being a team player.” There was speculation regarding how hard Kentucky was pursuing Stone, a 6-foot-10 big man out of Milwaukee (Wisc.) Dominican. He told Scout.com that the Wildcats have ramped up their interest. “They offered me and they are recruiting me hard,” he said. “Real hard.” Stone doesn’t currently have any visits scheduled, but a couple schools (likely Kansas and Kentucky) are vying to get him on campus for their midnight madness festivities. “I was talking about going to a Madness,” he said. “My mom asked me if I wanted to go to a Madness and I said ‘sure.’ So I’m trying to figure out which Madness I’m going to.” Stone, Scout.com’s top ranked player, said he plans to sign during the first signing period.
