Collins rises into national prominence
I've written on many occasions that big men frequently require more time to mature than perimeter prospects, and John Collins certainly slots into that category. But where he's atypical is that he's a class young and thus may need even more time to ripen. He's already well ahead of the curve. Despite not yet having a physique that resembles the one he'll carry later (he has some bulk but isn't really muscular), Collins arguably was the best frontcourt player at last weekend's Best of the South. At this juncture he's able to sense his reputation taking off. "Yes, things have been going well, most coaches say I can do it all," Collins said. "I can run pick and roll, shoot from mid-range a little bit and get some dirty buckets inside." The Florida Flash product is drawing increasingly close looks from major programs. "My offers are Miami, UCF (Central Florida), Kansas State, East Carolina, Maryland, Wake Forest, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Memphis and Tennessee (on Friday)," Collins said. "I don't think I'll decide in the near future." By the end of the month, look for that offer list to expand further. Collins possesses legitimate interior scoring tools along with a finesse touch as a shooter and passer. Along with his size, then, the interest always was a foregone conclusion. Still, he recognizes some areas of need. "I'm trying to work on my strength and quickness, and just become better on the perimeter," he said. The Flash will finish their summer in Milwaukee and Kansas for team events.
