Baulkman to play in Knoxville

Devon Baulkman

Getting help from the outgoing Class of 2014 always is extremely difficult in mid-May, which is why new Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall was happy to stick with someone he knows well.

Devon Baulkman, a 6-5, 205-pound wing at Gulf Coast State (Fla.) JC who'd signed to play for Tyndall at Southern Miss prior to the latter's move to UT, obtained a release and now has inked with the Volunteers.

A Georgia native, Baulkman averaged 16 points per game as a sophomore this past season along with five rebounds and two steals per contest. He set the school record for most points in a game in February when he poured in 48 points versus Northwest Florida State.

Tennessee undeniably faces major reconstruction. Questions had emerged even prior to Cuonzo Martin's departure for Cal, and the fall recruiting class became dismantled following the coaching change along with a roster that already was low on returning warm bodies.

To say Tyndall and his staff have been forced to scramble this spring would be a massive understatement, but on the whole they've recovered well under trying circumstances and players such as Baulkman will arrive with experience and ready to compete.

Tennessee continues to pursue 2014 recruits but will be able to formulate a more methodical and precise strategy during the 2015 recruiting cycle.
