Ryan breaks down Duke visit

Matt Ryan

Junior 2015 wing Matt Ryan took an unofficial visit to Duke on Saturday.

After taking in North Carolina on Wednesday, Matt Ryan, a junior wing at New Rochelle (N.Y.) Iona Prep, took an unofficial visit to Duke.

"I went over to Duke around 3:00," Ryan explained. "I met with coach [Steve] Wojo and got to see all the facilities and I got to put up some shots in the practice facility. The new practice facility, which is great. Basically that was the whole visit."

"I met with Coach K a little before the game and I was in the locker room before the game," he added. "The overall atmosphere of that place was incredible as well. I wouldn't say it as loud as UNC, but just the history of Duke and the tradition that they have is overwhelming."

Following the game, Ryan met with Mike Krzyzewski, Steve Wojciechowski and Jeff Capel.

"We closed the doors and he just said how immensely interested they are in me and what I can do," Ryan explained. "He wants me in their program. He wants to recruit me. He said after the season is over with them, him and the other coached are going to come up for a home visit."

Ryan has accumulated scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Boston College, Creighton, Rutgers, Arizona State, Davidson and Vanderbilt. Georgetown, Stanford, UNC and Michigan are also involved in his recruitment. Did Duke discuss a possible offer during the visit?

"They basically said everything except we are offering you a scholarship," Ryan said. "He said ‘you remind us of J.J. with what you can do and we give our shooters freedom and you're the top shooter in the class and we want you here.'"

"They know I'm interested in their program a lot and they said ‘we want you in our program' and coach K said he wants to coach me and he just loves everything that I'm about."

A four-star recruit, Ryan said Duke's tradition and place in college basketball is one of Duke's strongest selling points.

"I think Duke speaks for itself," Ryan said. "They don't recruit everybody. They recruit players who they think are Duke players and can succeed at the highest level in college basketball. Obviously their tradition, their fan base, their arena, it's just a great place to be for college basketball."

To go with visits to Duke and North Carolina this past week, Ryan has also taken unofficial visits to Notre Dame, Rutgers and Boston College.

Ryan will undergo surgery for multiple issues on March 3. He said the doctors will shave off a little bone on both sides of his hip to fix an impingement and repair his torn labrum. He's not expected to be 100-percent until late July and will be forced to miss the AAU season.

Due to the injury, Ryan will likely wait out the recruiting process.

"I'm still trying to figure all this out," Ryan said. "Everybody knows I can't play AAU. I'm going to have surgery March 3rd. I'm going to take my rehab real seriously. It's going to prolong my recruitment a little bit just because I probably won't be gaining any offers when I'm rehabbing. These schools have to wait until I get back on the court to see how I'm doing and we'll take it from there."
