Washington reeled in their first commitment of the 2014 class on Thursday.
Tristan Etienne, of Abottsford, British Columbia, committed to Washington over strong interest from Washington State, Portland, Portland State and UC Irvine.
“He’s from two hours from UW,” Tasha Bains, of Drive Basketball Club, told Scout.com. “It’s always been intriguing and it’s the one he wanted. They’ve been recruiting him since grade nine. He’s a big fan of UW.”
“He’s been on campus a couple of times,” Bains added. “He was just at their alumni game.”
According to Bains, Washington State offered last week. Then Lorenzo Romar called Etienne, a 6-foot-10, 215-pound center, and offered him this morning.
“He took it on the spot,” Bains said.
“He’s always had them in the back of his mind,” he said. “I know he loved the UW alumni game and he was really excited and amped up after the game.”
Bains said Washington is getting a mobile big man with a high ceiling.
“He’s very mobile for a big guy,” he said. “He has a ton of upside. He’s got to put on a lot of weight. He’s a really good athlete and a really good shot blocker. He can shoot the ball. He can put it on the floor. He has a lot of skills for a big guy.”
