NBPA Spotlight: Larry Austin
Point guard Larry Austin is someone who has been on the national radar for a long time. At 6-foot-1 with good strength and athleticism, Austin can really get to the rim. Now he is working on all aspects of his game, and one school is set to receive an official visit. At the NBPA Top 100 Camp Austin has been very solid, and is showing why he is pulling in high-major offers. "The camp is a great honor to be here playing against the top guys and coming out and competing," said Austin. "I felt I played pretty well the first game and then I had a minor setback getting hurt, but I just have to ice myself and get prepared." Recruiting wise numerous schools continue to stay in close contact with Austin. "I am taking a visit to Oklahoma State at the end of the month," Austin explained. "Vanderbilt, Indiana, Stanford, Kansas, DePaul, Illinois, and a few other schools like Tennessee have contacted me as well." Oklahoma State is getting a visit for several reasons, and Austin likes what the Cowboys have to offer. "They are good with their guys and they like to get up and down the court," said Austin. "They're a transition team. Also they helped Marcus Smart who wasn't at the top of the rankings, and now he will be a top five pick." Academics are also big for Austin and his family, and both Stanford and Vanderbilt provide that type of academic and athletic commitment that he is looking for. "Stanford is a good school," said Austin. "I spoke with Coach (Johnny) Dawkins before I came out here and he told me just have fun. He is a good guy and they have some good recruits coming in as well." About Vanderbilt he said, "I have spoken with them, but I haven't watched them play much. I spoke with Coach Yanni (Huffnagel) who came from Harvard, and they have been contacting me a lot." For now Austin is in no hurry, but the four-star prospect does know what he will be looking for in a school. "I look for the education, the coach, the guys who are there now at my position, and who they are bringing in," said Austin. "I want to see how I would fit in and where I would play."
