Five who could surprise

There are always prospects whose play exceeds their ranking, and here is a look at five who could fall into that category before it is all said and done.

Every year there are players in the back end of the top 100 or even not ranked that have a big impact right away and during their career for their respective teams. Here is a look at five who could surprise from the class of 2013.

Kids who typically exceed their ranking or surprise are ones who get better late and have a lot of untapped potential, and someone who fits that bill is Syracuse pledge B.J. Johnson. At nearly 6-foot-7 with long arms, high level athleticism, and a nice looking perimeter jumper, Johnson is a player who had a breakout summer before his senior year, and then continued his strong play during the season.

Johnson worked his way into the top 100, but still he isn’t talked about much as someone who will have a big impact on a loaded Syracuse roster. While his production might be limited as a freshman as Johnson continues to develop and earn playing time, by the time he is a junior or senior he could be someone putting up big time numbers in the Syracuse system.

Another wing who is ranked near the back of the top 100 but could make a huge impact is Sterling Brown. Brown is headed to SMU where he will have an opportunity to earn minutes right away. What is so impressive about Brown is that he has a great idea of how to play the game, and whenever he is on the floor good things typically happen.

Brown isn’t an elite athlete or an elite shooter, but he just makes good basketball plays. Also he will be excellent on defense, and do enough good things on offense that he will have those quiet games where he scores double figures and no one remembers it. With a solid basketball IQ, a high motor, and a great idea of what he is doing on the court look for Brown to put up very good numbers early on in his college career.

Heading to the Big East next year the Butler Bulldogs will need to replace some production on the low block and one player who can do that is Andrew Chrabascz. Chrabascz is a slightly undersized, but very tough and rugged kid who just finds a way to produce.

With a major hole at center, Butler could start Chrabascz right away, and his desire, motor, and know how should make him someone who finds a way to put up major numbers from day one, and then continue to do so as his career goes on.

In the Big Ten Nebraska has a lot of catching up to do to get to the top of the league, and they are hoping the 2013 class helps them get there. One big piece to the puzzle that they signed is Nick Fuller. The native of Wisconsin is someone who can really shoot the ball on the wing, but he also has the ability to take his man to the rim off the drive.

Fuller has more athleticism than most give him credit for and is just an extremely tough kid. Also he has done battle against many of the top wings in the country, and usually has held his own. He could definitely be one of those under the radar type players who has a very good career and helps Nebraska make strides within the Big Ten.

Finally someone off the radar who could have a huge career is Jonathan Severe. Severe racked up some impressive offers early on, and then did the same late, but still he decided to stay close to home and attend Fordham. This is big because he will have the opportunity to not only be an instant starter, but someone who gets a lot of shots right away in his career.

Severe is a very good shooter who can get hot from deep, and then also has a decent ability to go off the bounce. With that in a newly configured Atlantic 10, Severe should be a very productive freshman and someone who scores a ton of points in his college career.
