2015 Intro: Matt Holba

2015 prospect Matt Holba is off to a strong start during his sophomore season.

Athleticism has always been the name of the game for Chesterton (Ind.) forward Matt Holba. Now as a sophomore the 6-foot-7 Holba is working to diversify his game and become more of a threat as a true wing instead of playing down low.

In a big win over Saint John (Ind.) Lake Central, Holba led his team in points and rebounds scoring 21 and pulling down 10 boards. Holba scored in a variety of ways, mostly by getting to the foul line and driving, but also he hit a few jumpers. He says that comes from work being put in at the gym.

"I've really been working on my perimeter game and going off the dribble," said Holba. "Obviously being tall I have been in the post my whole life. I have been working on my perimeter game a lot, and getting to the rack and getting fouled then making my free throws."

Recruiting wise Holba is sitting on one offer with a lot more interest from some regional powers.

"Valparaiso has been here a lot and I have a verbal offer from them," said Holba. "Other than that I have been contacted by Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State, and Michigan."

With so much early attention Holba is taking it in stride and understands how it is in recruiting in this day and age.

"It's crazy and I am so young, but if they don't recruit you young I know they think they will lose the opportunity later on someone who turns out to be really good," Holba explained. "It is just great to be getting so much attention already."

For now Holba is focused on his high school season and he has big goals for this team.

"As a team we want to keep improving," Holba explained. "By the end of the season I think we will be a serious force and that we can really go far."
