St. Mary's picked up a big commitment on Wednesday when 6-foot-6, 190-pound Lake Oswego (Ore.) 2013 small forward Calvin Hermanson pledged to the Gaels.
"I just committed to St. Mary's," Hermanson told Scout.com. "After talking to my family I just felt like it was the best fit.
"I loved all the coaches and it's a great program. I'm looking forward to making an impact there. I went on a couple visits and had a great time. I felt like it was a great fit."
Hermanson chose St. Mary's over offers from Drake, Oregon State, UCSB and Utah.
He credited the Gaels staff for doing the best job recruiting him.
"They've been recruiting me for a while and I've been there twice and they're great guys who are really excited about having me there," he said. "I felt like I was really wanted and I'm looking forward to playing for them."
According to Hermanson, St. Mary's had long been the school to beat.
"I kind of knew they were in the lead for a long time," he said. "I appreciated everyone else that was interested but I had St. Mary's number one for a while."
This is a big commitment for St. Mary's. Scout.com recently watched Hermanson and wrote up the following evaluation:
Add Hermanson to the list of breakout players from July. He was terrific on Friday, showing he can score from all three levels. He's a threat to hit from three, but also would take defenders off the dribble and either pull-up for a midrange jumper or cut to the basket, where he would try to finish above the rim. Hermanson's high release on his jumper makes it tough to contest, and his quick first step makes him difficult to stay in front of. Hermanson is definitely a player.
Hermanson joins talented Albuquerque (N.M.) Eldorado shooting guard Cullen Neal in what has so far been a very successful 2013 recruiting class for the Gaels.
