Big East school holds early edge
Four-star center Andre Walker is a kid with a ton of upside. The 6-foot-9 and 210 pounder runs the floor well, has a nice touch facing the rim, and is a good athlete. Now the Potomac (Md.) Bullis School product is looking to have a big July in front of college coaches. His skills are a little raw, but Walker impressed during the spring with D.C. Assault. With a rapidly improving interior game to go along with his skills in the mid-range, Walker opened eyes with his play. "I think I am definitely more consistent finishing around the rim," said Walker. "Also I am doing a better job of hitting my free throws. I think I still need to get better running the floor all the time, but overall it has been improving." Recruiting wise it is no surprise that schools are taking interest. Walker says his phone has been fairly busy since June 15 with a few schools beginning to emerge. "I am getting a lot of phone calls and a lot of schools are sending me text messages and stuff," Walker explained. "A few of the schools I am hearing a lot from are DePaul, they have been on me real heavy, I am hearing a lot from VCU, and Xavier has been really turning up the interest in me. I get some other phone calls, but those would be the big ones." The school that has been on Walker the longest is DePaul. The Blue Demons have done a good job of establishing a rapport with him, and they find themselves with an early edge in the recruitment. "Probably they are at the top of my list right now," Walker said of DePaul. "They were the first college to start recruiting me heavily. I have a whole drawer of mail just from DePaul, and I enjoy talking to their coaching staff. My relationship with them is great, but I am still keeping things open." One school trying to make up ground is Xavier. According to Walker the Musketeers have really picked up the recruitment in the last month. "I have had a chance to talk to Coach (Mike) Pegues and he is letting me know that they are really interested," said Walker. "He told me that they are going to keep sending me mail. Coach Pegues seems like a really nice guy, and I am going to follow them and keep everything open." Walker is just taking the whole process in right now, and has an idea of what he is looking for in a school when the time does come down the road to make a decision. "I'm looking for a school that is going to be more than basketball," said Walker. "I am looking for a place with a good graduation rate, a nice campus, and good facilities. When it comes to basketball I am looking for a school that can really teach players." For now though, Walker's focus is on July, and for the No. 72 ranked player in the class that means accomplishing some goals. "My goals in July are really simple," said Walker. "I just want to be consistent and play the best game I can play. I just want to do everything I can to help my team win."
