A player who has intrigued with his combination of size and athleticism at the guard position is Cincinnati native Kevin Johnson.

It was a dream season for Cincinnati (Ohio) Summit Country Day guard Kevin Johnson. The 6-foot-2 floor general led his team to a state title. Aside from winning the state championship, Johnson improved his game and is now a major factor for Ohio Basketball Club.

With good size for a point guard and excellent speed with the ball, Johnson has a lot of upside. He showed it winning the state tournament in what turned out to be a dream season.

“It was a great feeling,” said Johnson of his high school year. “It was a surreal feeling. I knew we could do it and Coach Bradley was going to push us, and I think we can do it again next year.”

Recruiting wise he is getting an interesting mix of schools after him. Johnson has excellent grades to go along with his improving skill set on the court.

“Davidson, Cornell, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Dayton, and Toledo are the main schools that have been in touch with me,” he noted.

The school right down the road from Johnson is Cincinnati. He has visited the Bearcats several times unofficially and feels very comfortable with the school.

“I can pretty much go there,” said Johnson of UC. “It is right around the corner and I am familiar with the coaching staff and the players. It is just UC.”

Another school that has been very active recruiting him is Cornell. The Ivy League program offers Johnson an interesting mix between academics and basketball.

“That is good because when you hear from a school like Cornell, even if basketball doesn’t work out you are guaranteed a good job,” explained Johnson. “At the end of the day you have to have a plan B.”

At this point Johnson is in no hurry to make a decision and is focused on improving his total game and developing as a pure point guard. Still when looking at a school and talking to coaches he takes several factors into account.

“I am looking at style of play, how the coaches coach, and that everybody is working toward the same goal of winning,” said Johnson.

Currently Johnson is rated as a three-star prospect.
