Interest picking up in Hopkins
One of the most versatile guard prospects out west in 2013 is 6-foot-4, 181-pound Basha (Ariz.) combo guard Jaron Hopkins. A point guard for his high school team, Hopkins could be seen as a one, two or a three at the next level, as he has positive qualities for all three positions. He broke down the strengths and weaknesses of his game. "I'm able to penetrate and get our big guys open and get them easy buckets," Hopkins said. "I need work on my free throws; I missed two in the clutch (against Cesar Chavez) that would have sent it to overtime." Hopkins is up to eight scholarship offers, and he identified four programs as doing the best job recruiting him right now. "Washington State, San Francisco, Pennsylvania and Stanford are recruiting me the hardest," Hopkins said. Stanford has picked up its recruitment of Hopkins lately, and he's intrigued by the possibility of ending up in Palo Alto. "I like how Stanford is playing well in the Pac-12," he said. "It's a good academic school to get a degree from. I've talked to coach (Johnny) Dawkins a couple times and he's a really good guy and good coach." Washington State and Colorado have offered Hopkins scholarships and he's intrigued by both of them. "Washington State is a really good school," Hopkins said. "I looked online at their campus and it's nice, and they have a good coaching staff. Colorado is really good too. I went there for an unofficial visit and they have a really good coaching staff." Hopkins doesn't have any favorites and is in no rush to make a decision. "Everything is wide open; I'm not leaning towards anywhere," he said. "I'll probably wait for the beginning to middle of my senior year."
