Try the strength coach.
Todd Wright.
Mike Williams, the 6-8 PF from Camden (AL) Wilcox Central committed to Texas yesterday before playing an afternoon TOC game here at the Smith Center.
And Wright was a big part of that decision.
“Mike fell in love with the guy,” Southeast Pump ‘N’ Run coach Mark Komara said. “That was a big plus for Texas. Todd told him, ‘I can have you built up so quick.’”
Which is why Williams – already something of a specimen – is seeing Burnt Orange. Wright, of course, isn’t the only reason, though.
“I love the school and the surroundings,” Williams said. “I just love Texas.”
But …
“Texas can prepare my body for the next level,” he added. “They work you hard, and I want to have my body in top shape.”
Williams is the fifth and final piece of what Komara believes is a “Fab 5 type of class.”
He joins TX PF/C Lamarcus Aldridge, TX PG Daniel Gibson, TX SF Dion Dowell and TX C Connor Atchley in a Class of 2004 haul that could and should mean more Final Four trips for Rick Barnes’ Longhorns.
And Komara’s kid is a big reason for those kinds of lofty expectations.
“You can come in with those five guys and have a shot right away,” the coach said.
A shot at …
“The national championship,” Williams said with a smile. “Nothing less.”
Especially if Todd Wright has a say in the matter – which he clearly already does.
