After putting out the 2012 and 2013 rankings last week, it's time for the first release of our 2014…
Wiggins reacts to top spot
All summer long the top players in the class of 2014 were putting on a show. Many of the best prospects in the class were playing up a level or sometimes two, and making an impact on the AAU circuit. While many prospect shined, it became clear that Andrew Wiggins was the top player in the nation. "It means a lot," said Wiggins of being named to the top spot. "I work hard, my coaches have taught me well, I have confidence in my game, and I like to think I am worthy of being number one." While some prospects, such as Jabari Parker, covet being on top of the rankings, others such as Shabazz Muhammad don't pay much attention to it. At this point in time Wiggins falls somewhere in between in terms of how much he looks at things. "I would say I don't pay attention to it too much," Wiggins explained. "A lot of kids have had high rankings and didn't become a superstar, but it is good to be number one." According to Wiggins, he feels it was his play in Portland as well as Orlando that helped him stand out from the rest. "I think myself and my team had a good summer," said Wiggins. "We made a lot of history down in Orlando and at the Nike Global Challenge." On floor Wiggins is known for his athleticism and ability to put up huge scoring numbers, but he feels his game is becoming more diversified. "I think I do a good job of getting to the rim and creating for others," said Wiggins. "I also worked hard on my shot this summer, and now I think I have a done a good job of getting better with my outside shot." At this point Wiggins has kept it pretty quiet in terms of his recruitment. His father played at Florida State and the Seminoles have been involved since day one. Also showing him interest has been North Carolina, Duke, USC, and others. Even though he knows he is a wanted man, the recruiting process isn't a great concern right now for Wiggins. "I am not too sure who is calling," Wiggins explained." I don't really worry about a lot of the coaches calling and stuff. Honestly I am just focused on basketball and not paying too much attention to it." For now what Wiggins is focused on is leading his Huntington (WV) Prep team to a national title. "One of my goals is to win a national championship and I think it is possible," said Wiggins. "We have a great team and great coaches. That is my main focus this year."
