The East Carolina Pirates rounded out their recruiting class this week. Bill Herrion’s search for a point guard ended in New York with the signing of Japhet McNeil.

Japhet McNeil was the highest-rated point guard on our best available list for most of the spring. He’s an outstanding playmaker who can really handle the ball. Now, he’s headed to East Carolina.

“The opportunity to play was there,” McNeil said of the Pirates. “I was comfortable with the guys and I think they treated me well. That’s special because that’s the family. If they like you and you’re not even in the school, imagine what it’ll be like when they get there. Plus, I have family members that live 20 minutes away.”

McNeil said he fielded offers from Wright State and Ohio University in addition to the Pirates and both Clemson and Penn State had called on him late in the game.

He averaged 18 points and 6 assists last year.

In addition to the signing of McNeil, the Pirates also signed 6-4 swingman Frank Robinson out of Maine Central. Last year at MCI, Robinson averaged 17 points a game.
