Mike Gesell knew he wanted to start hashing out his college decision after July.
So the top 100 prospect took some unofficial visits and shortly after his trip to Iowa, he came out with his college decision. Gesell, a standout at South Sioux City (Neb.) High, picked the Hawkeyes.
“I took an unofficial there and it just really felt right to me,” Gesell said. “I had plenty of phone calls with coach [Fran] McCaffery and he just grew on me as a person. I think he’s just an honest, hard working coach.”
“It’s an exciting to be apart of the madness,” he added. “I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
Gesell said he also considered Stanford, Nebraska and Harvard.
“I just felt that Iowa would be the right fit for me,” he added. “I just decided to make my decision.”
Gesell’s next step is to try and lure close friend and AAU teammate Adam Woodbury to Iowa with him. One of their top targets, Iowa is among the man schools recruiting the top 100 big man.
“I’m definitely trying to get him to come with me,” Gesell said. “Who knows what he’s thinking or where he’s going. He’s a very good player and a very good friend of mine.”
Gesell is Iowa’s second 2011 commitment. He joins three-star center Kyle Meyer to make up their current two-man class.
Gesell, a four-star prospect, is ranked No. 93 overall in the 2012 class.
