It's clear the new Maryland staff is going to recruit locally. That started quickly, as Mark Turgeon scored a local kid his first week on the job.

It didn't take Mark Turgeon long to strike at Maryland.

Seth Allen, a 6-foot-2 combo guard out of Fredericksburg (Va.) Christian, gave a verbal commitment to the new Maryland staff on Saturday during an unofficial visit.

"I think he was really impressed with the campus today on the visit," Joe Allen, Seth's father, said. "I think he liked it."

Although Allen is a local recruit for Maryland, Turgeon had targeted him while the head coach at Texas A&M. He even made a trip this past spring to evaluate him. That early relationship paid off.

"They stayed in touch," the elder Allen said. "We were getting ready to make a trip out there, but luckily he stayed in touch. He came down and saw our son and they built a relationship and it went from there."

Allen had interest from Central Florida, VCU, Old Dominion, Virginia, Northeastern, Clemson, Mount St. Mary's and Miami. Ultimately, the Allen family felt comfortable with Turgeon because of his past success and family like atmosphere.

"[We are] very excited," Allen said. "He has a very good track record in developing guys. He's a family man. The Allen family is really strong on family. That's one of the big things. We wanted to put our son somewhere that he would grow with the same values that we have taught him."

On the court, Allen's high school coach, Darren Berkley, said he's a heck of a talent that can play both guard positions.

"He's so explosive," Berkley said. "He has great skill and vision. He has a great feel for the game. He has a 40-inch vertical. I haven't seen anyone stay in front of him."

Allen averaged 24 points a game as a junior.
