Obekpa picks up college interest

It's well documented that the 2012 class is loaded with talented post prospects. Yet another to keep an eye on is 6-foot-8 power forward Chris Obepka.

Interest is building for Chris Obekpa, of Centereach (N.Y.) Our Savior New American.

According to Erik Jaklitsch, Obekpa's high school coach, the 6-foot-8, 210-pound post prospect is an impressive defensive player.

"He's a super athletic power forward," Jaklitsch said. "He's an elite level shot blocker. He has impeccable timing and is very quick off the floor and he can rebound the heck out of the ball."

Jaklitsch specifically points to his strong ability to block shots.

"He's about 6'8 and a half and he has long arms," Jaklitsch added. "The other thing he does very well is he's a very good passer. He wants to pass the ball.

"He averaged over five blocks a game for us," he added. "He played well."

A number of schools have reached out to Obepka and he's already picked up scholarship offers from Cincinnati, West Virginia and St. John's.

Among the other schools have that been in to see him or called and expressed interest are Kentucky, Washington, Arizona, Texas, Pittsburgh, Providence, Florida, Florida State, Vanderbilt, Maryland and VCU.

"He hasn't taken an unofficial visit yet," Jaklitsch said. "He hasn't done any of that stuff yet."

Obekpa currently runs with the Metro Hawks on the EYBL circuit.
