McDonald's AA: Day Three Recap

Adonis Thomas and Kyle Wiltjer continued their strong weeks at the McDonald's All-American practices. Who else stood out?

Austin Rivers, SG – For a good amount of the practice on Tuesday, Rivers was on fire. He buried tough pull-up jumpers from well behind on the arc and mixed in floaters as well. When he has it going from long range, which is quite often, Rivers is likely the toughest to guard in the 2011 class. We’ve highlighted his skill set and ball skills, but his shooting ability is there and he’s certainly a shot maker.

Adonis Thomas, SF – Easily one of the more impressive performers this week has been Thomas, a 6-foot-5 strongly built wing. He’s spent a considerable amount of time working on his jump shot and that’s evident. His mid-range pulls look consistent and with him and space he knocked down three-pointers. Josh Pastner will likely insert him into his lineup immediately.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope – His overall performance here this weekend has done nothing but improve his stock. He’s a major long range threat and will be a nightmare for SEC coaches to defend next year. Sure he has a slender frame and needs to add strength, but his trigger is incredibly quick and his range is quite deep. He has no issues coming off curls, scoring off a bounce or two or shooting off of fades.

Anthony Davis, PF – Everything has happened so fast for Davis, Scout.com’s No. 1 prospect. The truth is he still has a lot to learn and develop, which is a scary thought. Defensively he’s a force. The opposition will always have to think twice about driving in the paint when he’s on the floor. He’s more advanced offensively than many realize, but that’s not where his impact will be seen out of the gate.

James McAdoo, PF – He’s certainly had his moments in Chicago this week. During every practice he’s been a force on both ends. His versatility and ability to make plays is what we like so much. From running the floor to facing up for jumpers to going into the post and scoring, he can do it. Draft Express’ Jonathan Givony said he was one of the top three pro prospects in the building. That’s high praise.

Myck Kabongo, PG – Every time Kabongo hits the floor you know what you’re getting from him. A speedy and elusive lead guard, Kabongo pushes the tempo when he has the chance and he has terrific vision. He said he’s going for the assist record in the game on Wednesday and with the weapons located around him it could be a possibility.

Kyle Wiltjer, C – For the second day in a row, Wiltjer stayed on top of his game. An efficient shooter, the talented big man was letting it fly from downtown and he knocked them down at a high rate. Wiltjer is a skill guy and he’ll maneuver and use bumps to create space and an opportunity for him to get off a shot. He’s been among the most impressive post prospects this week.

*Givony also mentioned how much he likes Marshall Plumlee. In fact, he said Plumlee is one of the better pro prospects in the event and expects some big things out of him in five years.

*Wayne Blackshear confirmed that he is out for the McDonald’s. He said he’ll have a MRI done on Thursday to determine how long he’s out for. He dislocated his shoulder.
